In a recent editorial, Doug and Jean Wilhide argue that current efforts to restructure the Minneapolis School District are an ill-advised attempt to repeat efforts proposed a generation ago.

The editorial, as it ran in the Star Tribune, recalls the experience the Wilhides had as new parents coming into opposition with efforts by school administrators to reshape the school district under the auspices of such ideals as addressing racial disparities.

Yet, they argue, the very policies said to be meant to remove disparities only create new diversity problems.

Other objectives lack a clear plan for achieving them, such as addressing the achievement gap, and the Wilhides state that advocates fail to even provide data demonstrating the gap.

Ultimately, the Wilhides call for parents to be engaged in ensuring their children get a good education, but note that the school administrators have to be willing to work with those parents and include them in their decision-making.
