MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Clara Conry & Gabe Chang Deutsch of South High School, The MSHSL State Debate Tournament Champions

Championtrophy

Minneapolis Public Schools issued the following announcement on Jan. 23.

Congratulations to Clara Conry & Gabe Chang Deutsch of South High School, who are the MSHSL State Debate Tournament Champions of policy debate! They competed in the final against Simon Jarcho & Isabel Kleckner of Washburn High School.

The MNUDL had a great showing:

* Highland Park Senior High School's Elsa Snowbeck & Henry Kelly finished as semifinalists and were named All State debaters;

* Teammates Mason Eischens & Sam Groven were quarterfinalists;

* South High School's Zigi Kaiser & Annabelle Niblett were Quarterfinalists

We also want to send huge congratulations to Coach Chris Stinson of South High School, who was named the MDTA Debate Coach of the Year! Gabe says: “Chris is a really helpful coach. He helps us understand how to debate in front of certain judges and how to make arguments more persuasive. He’s also so inclusionary on the team. He makes sure everyone’s voice is heard.”

Finally, we also want to send our best wishes to Simon Jarcho of Washburn HS, who was named the Tamar Kaplan Student of the Year. “No one is more committed to developing debate in the cities than Simon. He cares a lot about our program and the middle school program he helped found at Field Middle School,” says Coach Mary Dierkes. We are proud of Simon and grateful for his work in helping support other students in the community!

Thank you to everyone for a fantastic season, and for all your hard work at Sections, State, & beyond!
