Minneapolis—The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) will host "Royal Bronzes: Cambodian Art of the Divine," an exhibition that highlights the hidden bronze sculptures of Cambodia's Khmer Empire. This event, in collaboration with the Guimet – National Museum of Asian Arts, France, will run from October 25, 2025, to January 18, 2026. It features significant loans from the National Museum of Cambodia and over 50 pieces from the Guimet’s collection.
Katie Luber, Nivin and Duncan MacMillan Director and President of Mia, expressed excitement about sharing these exceptional objects with audiences in Minneapolis. She emphasized the importance of Southeast Asian heritage to the local cultural fabric.
A key piece in this exhibition is a monumental Reclining Vishnu sculpture. Conservation efforts at France's Center for Research and Restoration have allowed it to be displayed more fully than before. Liu Yang, Chair of Asian Art at Mia, highlighted how American audiences can now experience Khmer bronze artistry due to extensive archaeological research and international collaboration.
The exhibition is organized into five themes that explore various aspects of Khmer metallurgy and religious art. These include "The Origins of Copper Metallurgy" and "Casting for the King." The display aims to evoke awe similar to that inspired by Angkor itself.
Mia will also produce an English-language catalogue offering further scholarly insights into these artworks. Tickets for this landmark exhibition go on sale in September.
