The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) is set to commemorate the 100th anniversary of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, with an exhibition titled “Gatsby at 100.” This event will run from September 13, 2025, through March 22, 2026.

The exhibition will feature over 40 pieces including paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and decorative arts objects. A first-edition book in its original dust jacket will also be displayed. These items come from Mia's collection and other sources and include works by artists such as Oskar Kokoschka, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse as well as regional talents like Wanda Gág and Adolph Dehn.

Galina Olmsted, Mia’s Associate Curator of European Art and co-curator of the exhibition stated: “We hope visitors will discover the striking parallels between visual arts and literature in the 1920s.” She added that the centennial offers a framework to explore how artists addressed themes related to the American Dream and social change.

The exhibition highlights how the ideals portrayed in The Great Gatsby are reflected in visual arts from that era. Themes such as decadence and rapid industrialization resonate throughout these works.

Lori Williamson, Mia’s Supervisor of the Herschel V. Jones Print Study Room and co-curator said: “Fitzgerald was born in Saint Paul in 1896... By including both internationally celebrated artists and notable Minnesotan voices, this exhibition grounds the story in a local context.”

“Gatsby at 100” will also feature several events including a brunch on August 9 to celebrate the upcoming exhibition. Other activities include a special screening of Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation on October 25 and a Halloween party with live storytelling on October 30.

The exhibition will take place in Galleries 315 and 316 at Mia with free admission. More information can be found on their website www.artsmia.org.
