U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, issued a statement regarding the recent decision by the Senate Parliamentarian. The parliamentarian advised that certain provisions in the Republican reconciliation bill concerning Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry are in violation of the Senate’s Byrd Rule. Consequently, these provisions would require a 60-vote threshold to be included in the bill.
Senator Klobuchar expressed concern over these developments: “The Parliamentarian has made clear that Senate Republicans cannot use their partisan budget to shift major nutrition assistance costs to the states that would have inevitably led to major cuts." She emphasized that while proposed reductions to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) remain troubling for families, farmers, and independent grocers nationwide, efforts will continue to protect those in need.
Klobuchar urged for bipartisan cooperation instead of pursuing what she termed as a "rushed partisan process." She called on Republicans to collaborate on reducing costs for Americans and passing a Farm Bill beneficial for all farmers and rural communities.
