Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, along with Senators Amy Klobuchar, Ron Wyden, and Jeff Merkley, have urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune to reconsider the Republican plan to cut health care and food assistance. The entire Senate Democratic Caucus signed a letter expressing concerns about the potential impact on millions of Americans, including vulnerable groups such as seniors, children, people with disabilities, and veterans.

The letter states that "if enacted, these cuts to food assistance and health care will mean widespread hardship for Americans," potentially affecting rural hospitals, nursing homes, community health centers, farmers, independent grocers, and food banks. The senators argue that Congress should focus on policies that reduce costs rather than increasing them for essential services like food and health care.

Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) currently provide affordable health care access to millions of Americans. However, the House-passed Republican reconciliation bill proposes over $1 trillion in cuts to these programs. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), this could result in 16 million people losing their health coverage. The senators warn that such losses could lead to significant job loss and increased premiums across markets.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is also at risk under the proposed bill. It suggests nearly $300 billion in cuts to SNAP—potentially impacting over 3 million Americans due to stricter eligibility requirements. This could force states into difficult decisions regarding funding priorities.

The Democratic Caucus urges Senator Thune to reject the House bill's provisions and collaborate on measures that ensure continued access to necessary services for all Americans.
