The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) has announced the appointment of a new associate curator of American paintings. The role will be filled by Wigmore, who brings a wealth of experience from his previous position at the Carter. During his tenure there, he played a significant role in the 2018 reinstallation of their permanent collection and curated exhibitions aimed at expanding and diversifying narratives within American art.
One notable exhibition by Wigmore was "Trespassers: James Prosek and the Texas Prairie" in 2023. This exhibition united landowners, conservationists, and biologists across Texas to highlight endangered grassland ecosystems. Wigmore is also known for his contributions as co-author of the Carter Handbook and has penned essays for various exhibition catalogs.
In addition to these accomplishments, Wigmore is revising a book on landscape painter Albert Bierstadt and editing an upcoming multi-author publication focused on the complex legacy of Western American painter Charles Russell. He holds a degree from Carleton College and earned his PhD in art history from the University of Delaware.
Wigmore is set to join Mia in April.
