The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) is set to host the "Institute of Ice," a winter art event featuring nine hand-carved ice sculptures by Minnesota Ice. The event will take place on February 6, 2025, at Mia's Target Park and will remain open until the sculptures melt.
Visitors can expect to see large-scale sculptures, some reaching up to seven feet tall. Notable pieces include “Your Dog” by Yoshitomo Nara, Raffaelo Monti’s “Veiled Lady,” and Nick Cave’s “Soundsuit–Mia” and “Soundsuit–Giants.”
In addition to viewing the sculptures, attendees can enjoy a live carving demonstration showcasing intricate techniques used by Minnesota Ice artists. An ice bar will serve winter-themed cocktails and mocktails alongside hot cider and chocolate. The KCM Eggroll food truck will provide a unique culinary experience with its fusion flavors.
The event also features a fire pit lounge for visitors to relax around, a live DJ set providing seasonal music, and guided tours connecting the ice sculptures with their original inspirations from Mia's collection. Self-guided gallery tours are available for those interested in discovering more about the artworks that inspired these frozen creations.
Rob Bedeaux, Head of Marketing and Communications at Mia, expressed excitement about the event: “The Institute of Ice is a unique way to showcase Mia’s collection while celebrating Minnesota’s winter charm. We’re thrilled to offer an experience that combines art, community, and the season’s natural beauty in such an unforgettable way.”
The schedule begins with sculpture installation open for public viewing at 9 a.m., followed by various activities starting at 5 p.m., including an ice bar opening and live DJ set. The event concludes at 8:30 p.m.
Admission is free and open to all without reservations required. For further details on this event or other exhibitions at Mia, visit www.artsmia.org.
