An Oakdale man, Detroit Davis-Riley, has been sentenced to 90 months in prison for illegally possessing a firearm as a felon. This sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release, according to an announcement by United States Attorney Andrew M. Luger.

Court documents reveal that on February 13, 2023, a New Hope Police Department officer stopped a maroon Chevy Suburban after observing several traffic violations. The officer detected the smell of marijuana and saw drug paraphernalia in the vehicle's center console. A search uncovered a Glock model 17 GEN5 9mm pistol with a switch and large capacity magazine hidden under the cupholders. Additional ammunition and another large capacity magazine were found on the driver's side. DNA evidence linked Davis-Riley to the firearm, which had been reported stolen.

Davis-Riley's multiple prior felony convictions in Hennepin County prohibit him from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.

On March 14, 2024, Davis-Riley pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm as a felon. His sentencing took place on October 9, 2024, in U.S. District Court before Judge Michael J. Davis.

The investigation involved several agencies: New Hope Police Department, Crystal Police Department, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary S. Riverso prosecuted the case.
