Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Vice Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement on reports that the Republican Study Committee plans to bring their budget to cut Social Security and Medicare to the House Floor.

“Republicans are once again doubling down on slashing Medicare and Social Security for Minnesotan seniors. Republican Study Committee Chair Kevin Hern even said today that these are ‘policies that we believe will work.’

“What exactly do they think will work? Taking away healthcare for millions of seniors? Forcing millions of workers to work even longer without the guarantee of retirement security through Social Security?

“It’s clear why they keep trying to slash programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, SNAP and housing. MAGA Republicans believe that a dignified retirement, healthcare, shelter and food are benefits only the wealthy should have, rather than core components of a healthy society. They want to attack the few lifelines of the poor and middle class—so that they can pass even more tax cuts for corporations and billionaires. Not on our watch.”
