Today, City leaders celebrated the completion of two major street reconstruction projects in downtown Minneapolis – Hennepin Downtown and Fourth Street.
For the Hennepin Downtown project, Hennepin Avenue has been reconstructed and redesigned between Washington Avenue South and 12th Street to make the street more functional for all travel modes. The new Hennepin Avenue includes enhanced design features. Wider sidewalks are complemented with planting areas, enhanced corridor lighting, and the off-street protected bikeway. The addition of enhanced transit stops completes this multimodal corridor. Vehicle traffic includes two-way travel with improved signal operations.
Hennepin Avenue is one of the city’s most celebrated cultural corridors with several theaters and entertainment venues. This stretch of Hennepin was last rebuilt in 1986.
The Fourth Street Reconstruction Project involved reconstructing Fourth Street between Second Avenue North and Fourth Avenue South. The street now features new trees and planters, green infrastructure that treats stormwater runoff, wider sidewalks, improved crosswalks and a new two-way bikeway on the north side of the street, separated from traffic.
“Hennepin Avenue is back and better than ever,” said Mayor Jacob Frey. “It has been a long haul to get this magnificent street redone, but it’s worth it. This main corridor of our entertainment and theatre district is an asset to our downtown and city. It has to — and will — shine.”
