The Police Community Relations Council (PCRC) is pointing the finger at Minneapolis City Council for cutting $2 million from its budget and programs after the council ruled to defund the Minneapolis Police Department, according to CBS Minnesota.
The PCRC, which has been in operation for nearly two decades, took to a meeting to call on officials to step in amid the ordeal. The meeting took place at New Beginnings Baptist Tabernacle in Kingfield, overseen by Pastor Ian Bethel.
Members of the PCRC also broke down a complaining filed against the city council back in August, which the council has yet to respond to.
Along with cutting the budget, the council also removed 25 service community officers, a co-responder program and cut $1.1 million from the Office of Prevention, the Minneapolis Police Department alleged.
The organization is said to believe that trained professionals should be collaborating with police in certain problems facing the city, not replacing them.
“As a pastor, I learned that on day one. I don’t show up for no domestic stuff, I call the police and let the police go along with me,” said Pastor Bethel, according to CBS Minnesota.
