The Senate State Government Finance and Policy Elections Committee held a remote hearing to discuss election procedure and security in Hennepin and Ramsey counties.
Secretary of State Steve Simon instituted mail-in ballots for the Nov. 3 General Election. In turn, Republican members of the committee, including Chair Mary Kiffmeyer, have expressed concerns of voter fraud.
Following the allegations of voter fraud by Rep. Ilhan Omar, both Hennepin County Election Manager Ginny Gelms and Ramsey County Manager of Election David Triplett testified at the hearing.
“Hearings may seem repetitive at times, but it is worth every bit of time to ensure that Minnesota’s elections are free, fair and well-run,” Sen. Mark Koran (R-North Branch), vice chair of the Elections Committee, said according to the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus. “When there are allegations of fraud, it is up to the legislature and the press to investigate the validity of individual and broad claims of nefarious activity at the polls. Every voting American should have peace-of-mind when they cast their vote, knowing they did their part and that it will be recognized according to statute.”
In response to concerns about ballot drop-off, both Hennepin and Ramsey counties will only use staffed drop-offs for returning ballots. Other topics of discussion included how election judges are selected and spoiled ballots. Another hearing will be scheduled to get input from the secretary of state.
