The COVID-19 pandemic is causing many businesses to permanently close, with the Surly Beer Hall in Minneapolis being the latest to announce its indefinite closure coming in November.
The announcement of the closure came days after the intent to form a union was brought up by employees, but the business said this decision was made before talk of a union, CBS Minnesota reported.
“This is a business that, you know, was truly groundbreaking, broke many barriers for our state,” Liz Rammer, with Hospitality Minnesota, told CBS Minnesota.
Surly Beer Hall helped change the law, according to Rammer. It allowed other breweries to serve their own beer, which let many more open in the area. But the business was down revenue by 82%, which makes it difficult to stay open.
“It’s really a tipping point for us and it should be a real jarring wake-up call about what’s ahead for us,” Rammer told CBS Minnesota. “This is probably really just the start of what we’re going to see over the next several months.”
