House Rep. Jerry Hertaus (R-Greenfield) shared on Facebook that a bill passed the House to raise the sales tax to pay for the damage done by rioting and looting in June.
"The House majority has passed a bill this afternoon that would raise the sales tax in the seven-county metro area to help pay for the damage done by rioting and looting," Hertaus wrote on Facebook. "The sunset provisions were removed from the proposed legislation in committee and therefore both the tax and the organization created to administer the funds generated by the tax would be permanent if signed into law."
After George Floyd's death in May at the hands of Minneapolis Police, rioters and looters destroyed many buildings in the city, causing millions of dollars in property damages. The damage was done to minority-owned businesses, churches, non-profits, residences and other buildings in Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Star-Tribune reported.
Rioters also set fire to and heavily vandalized police precincts and other buildings, the newspaper reported.
