Protests and riots over the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd has led to the closing of 175 Target stores around the country, according to KIRO 7.
The move came following the third night of protests in a row just days after Floyd’s tragic death at the hands of now-former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, who has since been fired and charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
Target released a statement to announce the closures after many of its stores were looted amid protests over Floyd’s high-profile death.
Target said in a statement on its website, “We are heartbroken by the death of George Floyd and the pain it is casing communities across the country. The safety of our team and guests is our top priority. We recognize the important role we play in helping our communities shop for the food, medicine and other essentials they need. We apologize for the inconvenience and will reopen our stores on their normally scheduled hours as soon as it is safe to do so.”
The stores that are staying closed over the next few months are: the location on Lake Street in Minneapolis, the Buckhead South location in Atlanta and the Broadway in Oakland, California.
