An apartment complex that was under construction to be a site of affordable housing for the area in Minneapolis was burned down Wednesday, May 27.
Midtown Corner, located at the former Rainbow Foods parking lot, was set on fire and flames could be seen several city blocks away, Fox 9 reported.
It was one of 30 fires set during protests in response to the death of George Floyd, who died during an arrest by police.
The developer of the affordable housing complex indicated the project was set to be completed next spring and it called for 180 apartments and 38 affordable units.
A Hennepin County spokesperson told Fox 9 that $200,000 in public funds were set aside for the project for transit-related development.
The developer told Fox 9 that it was too early for him to say what the future plans would now be for the site.
The Minneapolis Fire Department responded to about 30 fires Wednesday night, including at least 16 structure fires, adding that “the causes of the fires were intention.”
