Minneapolis Public Schools issued the following announcement on Feb. 26.
Many people have questions about the outbreak of a respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus called COVID-19, especially how it may affect schools. From H1N1 to the measles, MPS has demonstrated its ability to manage illness outbreaks in a coordinated, strategic way that prioritizes the health of our students, families and staff. We have been monitoring COVID-19 closely over the last few months and meeting regularly to develop plans.
As of Feb. 27, there are no confirmed cases in Minnesota. The City of Minneapolis Health Department is actively monitoring the situation in partnership Minnesota Department of Health with and the CDC. We are working closely with the City of Minneapolis Government, Hennepin County Government, and the State as well to stay up-to-date on the best ways to keep students and staff safe.
For now, we are following their lead and recommendations. Soon we will be providing additional information laying out our plans, including potential impacts to MPS-sponsored travel. We will also keep our website regularly updated.
You can prepare, too — the same as you would for colds and flu:
- Protect yourself and others by washing your hands often with soap and water; covering your cough and sneeze; avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- If you or your child are sick, stay home.
- Be prepared in case you get sick and need to stay home.
- Keep enough food, regular prescription drugs and other necessities on hand in case you need to stay home and are not able to go out easily.
- Frequently clean all commonly touched work surfaces, work areas, and equipment (e.g., telephones, doorknobs, lunch areas, countertops, copiers, etc.).
We know COVID-19 may affect some students, staff and families even if they are not sick. Nonstop news coverage and high levels of uncertainty can feel scary and overwhelming. People may have concerns about loved ones who are sick or at risk of being sick. If your family needs support for any of these concerns, please work with your principal who can provide additional support. For staff, please work with your supervisor and utilize the Employee Assistance Program.
