CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS: City recognizes Data Privacy Day

Cybersecurity

City of Minneapolis issued the following announcement on Jan. 29.

As a Data Privacy Day Champion, the City reaffirms its commitment to supporting the principle that organizations, businesses and government all share the responsibility for protecting personal information by respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust.

The City Council’s Enterprise Committee will consider adopting Data Privacy Principles for the City of Minneapolis on Feb. 6. The full Council would then vote on the principles Feb. 14.

The City creates, collects and uses data in a wide variety of ways to help leaders deliver better City services and improve the lives of residents and visitors. The draft principles, which were developed by City staff with community feedback last year, ensure that the City considers both the risks and benefits that come from the creation, collection and use of data. The City’s Data Privacy Principles are as follows:

·       We value and prioritize your data privacy.

·       We do not collect data unless there is a reason to do so.

·       We do not keep data longer than we need to.

·       We strive to be transparent about when, why and how we collect and use data on individuals.

·       We protect your data.

·       We want your data to be accurate.

·       We leverage our partnerships to support data privacy.

·       We educate the public about their rights.

“We’re becoming a smarter and more responsive city, and we’re using data to do it,” said City Council Member Steve Fletcher, who sits on the City Council’s Enterprise Committee. “Our residents and visitors deserve to know that we are responsible with their information and respect their privacy – while also keeping our government open and transparent. I have supported and encouraged the development of this set of Data Privacy Principles so that every city department has clear guidance to prioritize data privacy as they plan for the future.”
