Minnesota Rep. Nick Zerwas (R-Elk River) officially resigned from the House of Representatives in early December in order to spend more time with his family following heart surgery, as initially reported by WCCO.
Zerwas made the announcement on Nov. 25 that he would be leaving office effective Dec. 6. A special election is slated for Tuesday, Feb. 4 for his seat.
“My recent heart surgery brought into focus the need to spend as much time as I can with my wife and 3-year-old son and spend my prime working years providing the best possible life for my family,” Zerwas said in a statement. “It is not easy leaving a job that I absolutely love, but I’m able to depart on my own terms with no regrets and with optimism for what lies ahead.”

Since completing four terms in the position starting in 2013, Zerwas sponsored numerous state legislation pieces. He pushed for a reform for solitary confinement in Minnesota prisons and for the Right to Try legislation, which allows terminally ill patients to have easier access to clinical trials and experimental treatment drugs.
Zerwas was also the Republican lead on the House Government Operation Committee.
