New technology is being implemented with the Minnesota Department of Transportation that will help catch individuals who are wrongfully traveling in carpool lanes.
The technology will assist police in catching the nearly one in seven drivers who wrongfully use carpool lanes during rush hour traffic in the morning, News 4 Tomorrow reports.
The technology consists of a system of beacons and detectors that will be along Interstates 35W and 35E.
MnPass spokeswoman Sue Gergen told News 4 Tomorrow that the technology will catch violators and hopefully deter others from entering carpool lanes to begin with.
The way the technology works, Gergen told News 4 Tomorrow, is that when a driver passes by one of the beacons, it searches for a MnPass and then if the vehicle does not have one, an officer can determine if there are enough occupants before making the decision to pull over the vehicle.
