MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Minneapolis Public Schools’ 8th Annual Farm To School Community BBQ Celebrates Local Food

Foods

Minneapolis Public Schools issued the following announcement on Sept. 20.

Governor Tim Walz will join the BBQ on Tuesday, which promises to be an evening of good food, local farmers, and free family fun! This annual community event demonstrates Minneapolis Public Schools’ (MPS’s) commitment to supporting small to mid-size farmers, serving fresh and locally-grown food in our lunchrooms, and educating our students and families about the importance of local food, agriculture, wellness, and nutrition. The BBQ will take place in the parking lot of MPS’s Culinary Center, right in front of a large garden transformed into an outdoor farm classroom.

Come meet the farmers who grow the district’s food and learn about the real food served in MPS schools. Dinner—served by farmers and chefs—will feature Farm to School produce, local meats and foods, and several recipes developed by the district’s True Food Chef Council and annual Jr. Iron Chef Competition.

The event will feature veggie car racing, live honeybee hive observations, bike blender smoothies, and plant-your-own herb gardens. And the evening will heat up at 6 p.m. when special guests, including MDA Assistant Commissioner Patrice Bailey and Senator Bobby Jo Champion, team up with students in a high-stakes corn-shucking competition! Teams will race to see who can shuck the most corn from Untiedt’s Vegetable Farm.

WHAT: 8th annual Farm to School Community BBQ

WHEN: Tuesday, September 17th,  4:30-7:00pm. Corn-Shucking Contest at 6:00pm

WHERE: 812 North Plymouth Avenue (parking lot of MPS’ Culinary Center)
