MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Global Youth Climate Strike

Climatechange

Minneapolis Public Schools issued the following announcement on Sept. 18

We want to make families aware of some planned student action around climate change this week, including walkouts. We sent an email with additional information, but the most important thing to know is this Friday there is a Global Youth Climate Strike scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Twin Cities that calls for students to walk out of school and head to the State Capitol to demand action on climate change.

MPS respects students’ First Amendment right to peacefully assemble and will not discipline students for the act of protesting as long as the protest remains peaceful. Our normal walkout protocol regarding students returning to school and afterschool activities continues to apply when students leave their school grounds/campuses. To be clear, if students walk out of school, they will NOT be able to return to the school for the remainder of the day or participate in after-school activities such as athletic events or homecoming—even with an excused absence.

We hope you use this information to have a discussion with your child and make an informed choice together about their participation and the sacrifices that may be required if they participate.

Again, more information is available on our website at https://emss.mpls.k12.mn.us/student_walkouts or in the email we sent you.
