MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Get Ready for Full-Service Community Schools

Coomunityschool

Minneapolis Public Schools issued the following announcement on Sept. 18

A Full-Service Community School (FSCS) is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and local community resources. An FSCS focuses on academics, health and social services, youth development, and community engagement to improve student learning and strengthen families and communities. Schools become centers of the community and are open to everyone – all day, every day, evenings and weekends.

Bethune, Cityview and Green Central were identified for participation in this initiative based on their location, available space in their buildings, community needs, and existing partnerships. FSCS responds to societal factors, family circumstances, poverty and health problems. All children, regardless of their economic, racial or family circumstances, deserve access to an array of opportunities. We also need FSCSs to re-engage the broader public in our schools.

Three of our schools will become Full Service Community Schools in Fall 2019 – courtesy of a federal grant and support from the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board. School needs assessments are taking place through summer 2019. Supports and services will begin at schools in fall 2019. These needs assessments will be used to determine the programs, community partnerships and services that will be available at each site. An on-site FSCS Coordinator at each school will coordinate services with community partners, and work directly with families to connect them with appropriate services.

To get involved, contact DeSean Smedley, Full-Service Community Schools Program Specialist, at desean.smedley@mpls.k12.mn.us or 612-668-3864 or Patrice Howard, Executive Director of Community Education, at patricej.howard@mpls.k12.mn.us.
